Dr. Heloisa Portela has worked with children, adults, couples, and families since 1994.
At first, "Dr. H" practiced as a licensed clinical psychologist in Brazil, where she specialized in working with families, adults, and adolescents. Once in the United States, she became a licensed professional counselor and expanded her practice to include children and couples.

Her doctoral research explored the relationship between social support and culture shock.
Dr. Portela also teaches graduate courses in counselor education, psychology, and marriage and family systems at North Carolina Central University and at Capella University.
