Theoretical Orientation

My theoretical framework is integrative in nature, which means that I select concepts and methods from a variety of theoretical orientations. My counseling approach was initially founded in the psychoanalytical/psychodynamic perspective that assumes people’s needs for connection/attachment, intimacy, and relationships. Just as a secure attachment facilitates a child's development, a trusting relationship between counselor and client is the foundation for an effective therapeutic relationship. I strive to create a non-judgmental environment by genuineness, empathy, and unconditional acceptance of clients. In addition, I often use the following techniques in my healing work with clients: play therapy, Sandplay®, EMDR, cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, art, relationship enhancement, sex therapy, and psycho-education.

About Dr. Portela

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and Supervisor providing counseling services and psychotherapy to individuals, couples and families in Raleigh, North Carolina. I have worked with children, adults, couples, and families since 1994. At first, I worked as a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in Brazil, where I specialized in working with families, adults, and adolescents. Once in the United States, I became a licensed professional counselor and expanded my practice to include children, and couples.

Besides psychotherapy, I also provide clinical supervision and training for mental health practitioners. I am one of a handful of Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisors in Wake County who are also credentialed as a supervisor in play therapy. Please see the services page for more information.
